The topic of the retreat is The Bodhisattva Maitreya Buddha.
Two thousand five hundred years ago, Shakyamuni Buddha proclaimed that the next Buddha will be named Maitreya, the Buddha of Love. Thich Nhat Hanh noted that Maitreya, the future Buddha, would not be an individual, but a sangha:
The Buddha, Shakyamuni, our teacher, predicted that the next Buddha would be Maitreya, the Buddha of love…. It is possible that the next Buddha will not take the form of an individual. The next Buddha may take the form of a community, a community practicing understanding and loving kindness, a community practicing mindful living. And the practice can be carried out as a group, as a city, as a nation.
-Thich Nhat Hanh
The energies and qualities of Bodhisattva Maitreya has appeared over many centuries and cultures as a Bodhisattva in Paradise; a teacher transforming confusion and suffering with fierce equanimity and a messenger of social revolution.
In this retreat, we will hear of the legend of Maitreya, we will honor her as the mother of all Buddhas, we will practice extending our kindness both near and far away. We will enrich our contemplative time together by a focus on the somatics and resilience of healing as the ground of our insight and release. The core practices we will share are noble silence, sitting, walking, eating and standing in mindful awareness. It is our hope to create a container of safety for all who attend so that our seeds of beloved community can grow deeper with more vibrancy and strength of kindness.
The manifestation of this ambrosia of loving kindness is more urgent now than ever. Come explore the teachings of healing, transformation and liberation of ourselves and our society.
