The 10 Worlds: Hungry Ghosts | Talk by Dr. Larry Ward

The hungry ghosts with a swollen belly and a throat the size of a needle.

Hungry Ghosts

The 10 Worlds

Join us on March 20 for an online talk by Dr. Larry Ward, poet, author and spiritual teacher, on the realm of the hungry ghosts. The hungry ghosts realm of the 10 worlds is driven by the energy of desire. When it is not managed with mindfulness, it grows and metastasizes into greed, aversion, and ignorance.

We all have the quality of the hungry ghost in us. The consequence for individuals and for society is when the energy of greed is so powerful that it becomes institutionalized. For Larry, the practice is to recognize in ourselves when we are falling into the realm so that we can transform our energies into something more healing and compassionate for all beings.

This talk is a part of our year long teaching series on the Buddhist story of The 10 Worlds. The worlds, or realms, are different states of mind that are fluid and impermanent. You may run through all 10 in a day; all 10 are existential realities with their own moods, characteristics and inquiries. No matter the realm, each one invites us on a quest to learn more about ourselves, to cultivate our capacity to adapt, and to relieve the suffering of all beings by breaking from the endless cycle of samsara.

Event also includes: Meditation, prayer, poetry, practice invitations and gentle movement exercises.
