A Day of Mindfulness in the Plum Village Tradition


Dear friends,

We are delighted to be partnering with the global Plum Village sangha, monastic and lay, to participate in this special Day of Mindfulness commemorating the 25th anniversary of 9/11.

Joining online will be Lotus’ guiding teacher Dr. Peggy Rowe Ward and Sister Ðịnh Nghiêm, former Abbess of New Hamlet in Plum Village. Dr. Katie Hammond Holtz and local sangha members will be joining on-site at the beautiful Jenkins Arboretum in Devon, Pennsylvania.

Teacher Bios

Dr. Peggy Rowe Ward

Peggy is the Co-Founder, Guiding Teacher, and Co-Executive Director of The Lotus Institute. She is a world- renowned spiritual teacher, educator and author of Love’s Garden: A Guide to Mindful Relationships. For over 40 years, she has been dedicated to supporting the healing and transformation of all people through retreats, spiritual direction, university courses, Dharma talks and more. Peggy offers a path of deep insight that enables her students to discover and embody their most creative and authentic selves.

Sister Định Nghiêm

Senior Dharma teacher and former Abbess of New Hamlet, Sister Nghiêm received full ordination to Bhikshuni in 1996 and was the 21st disciple of Thay in the 43rd generation of the Lin Chi lineage, 9th generation of the Lieu Quan lineage (a Vietnamese branch of the Lin Chi lineage). Sister Nghiêm was alongside Thay after his stroke in 2014 until his passing. Returning to Plum Village after an absence of several years, Sister Nghiêm conveys a deep warmth and understanding of Thay and the community in her intimate sharing with monastics and laypersons. 

Dr. Katie Hammond Holtz

Katie received ordination from Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh into the Tiep Hien Order in 2002. A Senior Order of Interbeing Member, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Teacher, practicing licensed psychologist, and Certified Anam Cara Spiritual Mentor, Katie is well-known for her creativity, open-heartedness and warmth, and in her teaching. Practicing mindfulness for 40 years, and a pioneer sangha builder since then, she is well-versed in both traditional and new approaches to practice. She formed Coming Home Mindfulness Practice Center in 2009, offering traditional practice, affinity groups for women, and leading mindfulness retreats for the public and health care professionals.
