Ignorance and the Work of Awakening

A three-part exploration of the Three Poisons and their antidotes

For this final talk in the series, Dr. Larry Ward will offer his reflections on the third of the three poisons—ignorance. He will introduce three unique types of ignorance, their social consequences, and how we might recognize and befriend them.

Together, we’ll explore the question: “How do we practice in a society shaped by ignorance without losing hope, without abandoning our intention to help and to resist?”

This 90-minute gathering will include gentle movement exercise, meditation, poetry, the dharma talk, and time for shared inquiry through Q&A.

The Wheel of Life (bhavachakra)

At the center of the diagram lies a rooster, a snake, and a pig, symbolizing the three poisons of greed, hatred, and ignorance, respectively. Notice how they are consuming each other. The reason the Buddha used the word "poison" is because it is a systemic virus that gets into our individual and collective bodies and minds. As soon as you get that virus you need the antidote to slow down the effect. Our practice is that antidote.
